There’s no greater need and opportunity for sports ministry than what we’re facing now. So we wanted to send you an update on our planning for the 2021 season. Normally at this time of the year, we are preparing to open up registration for our returning families. But like most everything else in our world today, Upward is also dealing with the impacts of the coronavirus and COVID-19. We are doing our best to ensure that we can conduct a season that is not only successful, but safe for our players, parents, coaches, and volunteers. That may necessitate a number of changes to the way we do Upward Basketball.

Whatever modifications we have to make, we believe they’re worthy to do because of Upward’s mission: promoting the discovery of Jesus through sports. We want to see connections. We want to see kids playing. We want to see kids receiving the Gospel. But we must do this safely and remain within the guidelines provided to us.

Centreville Upward is a ministry of Centreville UMC and as such, we must follow the safety requirements set by CUMC’s Healthy Church Team and the United Methodist Church’s Virginia Conference, in addition to the guidelines in place at the state and local level. Because of these additional safety requirements, please realize there’s a possibility other local leagues will be playing basketball before Upward is.

We’ve made the following decisions in response to COVID-19:

1. Registration for the 2021 season will begin no earlier than October 15. We may push this date back further once we reach October.

2. Practices will not begin before January.

3. All families who participated in 2019-2020 will be considered a returning family for the 2022 season, regardless of participation in 2021.

We believe the Lord is sovereign over all things, including COVID-19. Our peace and strength is in Christ, and we have a unique opportunity when facing battles like this. God tells us over and over in Scripture to not be afraid or discouraged because He will be with us.

For now, you can expect another update during the first week of October. We promise to communicate as soon as we receive new information that impacts the season.

Please continue to join us in prayer as we place our trust and confidence in the hope of the gospel of Jesus Christ!

Looking upward,
Zack & Chris
